Wikis, XML, and Structured Authoring
Wikis have been gaining popularity as a web authoring tools at the same time that IBM's DITA standard for technical documentation is gaining traction among pubs managers. The question often comes up, can the two co-exist? Can content authored in a wiki be put into a structured XML system, and vice-versa?
Wiki environments appear to be the opposite of highly structured authoring environments such as DITA XML. The focus of DITA is to enable small containers of content to be categorized and tagged with metadata so as to facilitate content reuse. Implicit in DITA is a pre-defined structure and environment into which content must "fit". Bringing the concept and culture of wiki authoring into this environment seems to be a square-peg-round-hole problem.
Wiki Solutions is committed to addressing this problem by providing tools, processes, and resources that help our customers benefit from the best of both worlds.
